On Friday, Calvin Harris released his highly anticipated fifth studio album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol.1.
The Scottish DJ and producer has been teasing the body of work for some time, after dropping four of the tracks in the run up to the album release. From the off, we came to realise that Funk Wav Bounces Vol.1 would be unlike anything that Calvin has previously released. Known for his anthemic dance tracks, this album sees Calvin diversify his musical style, treating us to ten groove-infested offerings which are perfect for the summer months.
Additionally, Funk Wav Bounces Vol.1 sees Calvin team up with a plethora of artists on every track. Earlier this year, Calvin announced that he’d worked with “the greatest artists of our generation” and he wasn’t joking. Boasting the likes of Frank Ocean, John Legend, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Frank Ocean, Migos, and more, the album is full to the brim with A-List names.
Stepping out of his usual musical comfort zone has been a risk worth taking for Calvin Harris. Laden with funk, the album is bop after bop of summery goodness. Whilst each track is worth a spot on your chill out playlist, we’ve narrowed down our five favourite tracks from Funk Wav Bounces Vol.1.
1. ‘Holiday’ featuring Snoop Dogg, John Legend and Takeoff
‘Holiday’ was one of the tracks that we were most excited for and it definitely did not disappoint. Combining the greatness of Snoop Dogg, John Legend and Migos’ Takeoff, ‘Holiday’ opens with a hypnotic beat which hooks us in immediately. Snoop delivers some classic rap vibes before John takes it away with his soulful vocal. Takeoff also brings a fresh vibe to the track by delivering a slick verse. Is it time for us to go on holiday yet?
2. ‘Heatstroke’ featuring Young Thug, Pharrell Williams and Ariana Grande
‘Heatstroke’ was the second track to be unveiled from the album and features Young Thug, Pharrell Williams and Ariana Grande. Whilst Young Thug takes the limelight during the track, Pharrell and Ariana also deliver some flawless vocals. The laid back offering is the perfect song to listen to whilst basking yourself in the sun.
3. ‘Hard to Love’ featuring Jessie Reyez
‘Hard to Love’ is the final song on the album and showcases the irresistible vocal of Canadian singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez. The song rounds off the album perfectly and is a very simple affair. Consisting of a gentle yet mesmerising beat, ‘Hard to Love’ allows Jessie’s voice to take centre stage.
4. ‘Faking It’ featuring Kehlani and Lil Yachty
‘Faking It’ is the penultimate song on the album and proves to be an incredibly funky RnB track. Kehlani truly shines on the song, with Lil Yachty offering a rap verse in the latter half. ‘Faking It’ is a strong contender for song of the album, and we can’t get enough of the changing groove throughout.
5. ‘Feels’ featuring Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry and Big Sean
We’d be lying if we said that we weren’t hooked on ‘Feels’ from the second we first heard it. The song draws you in from the get go with its psychedelic melody, making it the ideal chilled summer song. Pharrell’s unique vocal stands out during the verses whilst Katy Perry makes sure that the chorus is fun and flirty. Big Sean also adds his spin on the song during his verse. “Don’t be afraid to catch feels”…it’s too late, we’re already feeling a whole lot of love for this song.
