Joel is the son of Dolores and The Rev. John Osteen (John Hillery Osteen), a Southern Baptist pastor. He is married to Victoria (Iloff) Osteen, who is his co-pastor. The couple has two children. His father founded Lakewood Church, of which Joel is the senior pastor.
Joel’s patrilineal line can be traced to Solomon Osteen, who was born, c. 1774, in South Carolina, and to his wife, Mary Ann Royalston. The surname Osteen may have a Dutch origin.
Joel’s paternal grandfather was Willis Jackson Osteen, Sr. (the son of Elijah H. Steen/Osteen and Clarinda Ray). Willis was born in Arkansas. Elijah was the son of John J. Osteen and Celia Boyette. Clarinda was the daughter of Willis Ray and Rebecca Sutton.
